Project Yeti

It turns out that the story of the Yeti, which everyone heard about, but nobody saw it, can be completely true. The difference is that it does not apply to the elusive mountain creature, but the Golf Mk1 project, built in secret from the world.

„I tried to build the car without publicity, in the comfort of my own garage. A story like about the Yeti, everyone has heard, but nobody has seen it”- Artur Adamczak, the owner of the presented Mk1, starts his story with humor. I honestly admit that I have such a huge sentiment for such cars, although they are less and less common in the prevailing reality of social media. I remember the times when the only opportunity to see new projects and modifications in already known carts was rarely organized, scattered all over the country events. Those times, like projects, have something special. Today, all this aura of mystery does not really exist, which of course has its good and bad sides. Without delving too much into the details and agonizing about the 'good old days’, it is enough to say that in today’s realities projects such as those that appear without any hype and surprise with their presence, enjoys double.

„I did not have to be infected with the passion for motorization. Already as a small boy, I was crazy about it. I was browsing the automotive magazines and I was only interested in the VW brand, perhaps because there was the most articles about it. In addition, during my childhood, my uncle was driving the Golf Mk1 and I always told myself that if I grow up I will also have it”- continues Artur. The road to fulfilling my dreams, like most of us, was long and full of ups and downs. It started with models, and finally, after passing the driving test, increase the scale (literally and figuratively) of all the fun. The first one went to the cherry Mk3, which was a kind of experimental rabbit for the young adept of modification. Then came the time for the younger brother, Mk4 with the TDI engine, in which the introduced changes had a more serious dimension. The third in the queue was Golf of fourth generation, but this time with the 2.8 V6 engine and 4Motion. „Just with the purchase of this car it began to give birth in my head the idea of building something old school with a strong heart. I also had the Golf R32 on my head, but at that time I did not even think about it, that this engine will come into my Mk1, which I did not know yet that I would become the owner”- says Artur.

Artur is not simply the owner of a modified Volkswagen. He is a man who lives this brand (that’s why he suits the VOLXZONE climate so much) and has broad horizons not only on the national or European scene, as his words says: „In the summer of 2013 I watched many films with interesting Volkswagen classics. At some point, I found an interesting video with the Golf Mk1 GTI, which inspired me so much that I could not sleep for several nights. After a short time, I learned that in a nearby town someone had two of them for sale, one with a wide one and one with a narrow lamp. The choice was obvious.” A completely spontaneous decision meant that the yellow three-door Golf L with 1.1 engine went to Artur’s garage. From that moment everything happened quite quickly: „An hour later, without a review and with a leaky silencer, but on its own, the car reached my garage. A month later, the R32 engine was already on the pallet. Initially, I thought about 2.8 VR6 12v, but due to the heavy exploitation of most of these units, I bet on their more powerful successor.”

Pierwsze dwa lata nadwozie spędziło u blacharza, ponieważ wszystkie prace przebiegały spokojnym tempem, z zachowaniem dbałości o wszystkie szczegóły i uwzględnieniem prawidłowej technologii budowy, a także z wielokrotnymi przymiarkami nowych części. „W tak zwanym międzyczasie również aktywnie działałem. Kompletowałem wszystkie potrzebne elementy, a także jeździłem do blacharza, by pomóc mu w pracach.

Of course, in the case of projects created from scratch, you can not talk about building it in a few months (unless at the expense of quality), but taking into account how advanced the work was and how many of them Artur did alone, I must admit that for the last four years he did not idle. Three months after the purchase the car was only a bare body. Although initially Artur did not assume such a far-reaching reconstruction, during his lifetime he took (rightly from somewhere else) a decision about a comprehensive and professional approach to the subject, even at the expense of the time devoted to him. For the first two years, the body was used by the tinsmith, because all the work proceeded at a calm pace, with care for all details and taking into account the correct construction technology, as well as the repeated attempts of new parts. „In the meantime, I was also actively working. I completed all the necessary elements, and also went to the tinsmith to help him in the work. Among other things, I’ve polished the whole body to bare metal”- recalls Artur, counting all the equipment that was 'picked up’ during the process. In June 2016, the bodywork was finally covered with epoxy and a new maintenance. At this stage, for the first time, the target heart went to the bay. Fortunately, there are a lot Mk1 with the R32 engine around, so it went without any major problems with assembly. After removing the unit, the long-awaited time of painting to the dream red color came to emphasize the stylization of the GTI, which Artur chose.

Do Mk1 Artura trafiły wyłącznie części z najwyższej półki. Na szczęście tyle w zupełności wystarczy, by sprawnie i bezpiecznie wyhamować lekkie Mk1.

Putting the car already painted together is the most pleasant, but also the most stressful moment. You need to keep cool and think about every move, so as not to accidentally spoil the work. Only parts from the top shelf have been brought to Mk1 by Artur. „I exchanged all possible elements for new, coming from the shelves of German and Polish Volkswagen Classic Parts, and if they were not available, I used only high quality replacements. I also replaced all parts of the chassis, powder coated or galvanized. In truth, only the glass, plastic interior and refreshed carpet remained from the original”- he concludes. Although, in general, this stage should be included among those more grateful, unfortunately it was not without disappointments. While the rear 239-millimeter brakes went smoothly, the complete front-mounted Porsche caliper set did not fit into the already built custom BBS RA three-piece rims on which Golf had moved last season. Unfortunately, there was no alternative but to make a concession and use discs with a diameter of 312 millimeters and calipers from the Golf Mk5 GTI. Luckily it is enough to lightly and safely brake the light Mk1. This part of the construction was crowned by the final assembly of the engine, which, of course, underwent the required renovation and was completely painted black. Because Artur did not decide to clean the space under the hood, the whole thing looks like it has left the factory.

I mentioned earlier that the red color of the body was supposed to match the GTI style. That’s how it happened, and to recognizable details, such as black metal bumpers, a wide front hockey, or straps glued on the sides, joined a few less common accents from the era. „The overall vision from the beginning was that Golf would look like a classic on steroids. The GTI package was supposed to match the engine that complements this image.” In short, everything is perfectly connected with each other. The climate of Retro-Racer highlights the Kamei inlet on the bonnet, as well as the rear spoiler and the extremely rare VOTEX blind. The history of it purchase is as interesting as the other threads of this story: „I learned about this blind accidentally. It was hanging on the wall in the garage of an elderly gentleman who had dismantled it from his Mk1 many years earlier because it restricted his visibility. It was a unique opportunity!”

The interior of Artur Golf also maintained in a climate that matches the rest of the classics combined with the motosport. The rejuvenated original elements of the interior were complemented by bucket seats from OMP with harness belts of the same company, a custom roll-bar painted in body color, and black leather trimmed door and steering wheel from GTI. The cult variety also comes with clocks and a center console with additional indicators and a hard headliner. In such an atmosphere, you definitely feel the sporting spirit, especially to the accompaniment of the sounds issued by the engine.

„When everything was assembled, something was created that I had been waiting for so many years. Millions of photos and hours spent in the garage to develop and improve the project – today there is no day that I would not stand with Mk1 eye to eye in the garage”- sums up Artur. And it really seems that he managed to achieve the intended goal one hundred percent, because at the moment it can be said that the project is finished. Of course, new tastes appear from time to time, but these are cosmetic issues rather than radical solutions. The most striking change for this season are the wheels. Custom three-piece rims are based on Ferrari 348 wheels and have dimensions of 7.5×17″. Opinions about them are extreme, some love them, others hates, but you can not deny them originality.

Asked about the challenges during the construction of the car, Artur replies: „Actually, the whole project was a great challenge for me. I never thought that I would build a car on such a scale and so heavily modified. During the construction, I wound up myself, watched other projects from abroad and they motivated me to work. In this way a vivid vision of the car was created.” In short, the elusive yeti turned out to be quite real and managed to face him. Is Artur, therefore, ended his adventure with his search? Not really, because it’s starting to mention the vision for another car. We, therefore, have to be patient and reserve space for the next article, because we do not have to worry about quality and style.
